Small But Mighty: The Perfect Swimsuits For Petites

For women who are under 5'4", swimsuit shopping can difficult. Swimsuits that look great on taller women can swamp petite women, making their proportions appear out of balance. But solving the petite challenge is not as simple as just finding petite sizes of your favorite suits. The trick is to choose just the right look to enhance your best qualities, while also visually lengthening shorter legs or torso. But don't worry; there is the perfect style for each petite woman, no matter what body type she has. Let's look at just a few of the beautiful options that are available.

ONE-SHOULDERED
One-piece swimsuits are great for elongating a short torso. If most of your height is in your legs, a sleek one-piece suit will balance out your torso. A one-shouldered suit will draw the eye up and over one shoulder for an even longer line. As an added bonus, this look is sophisticated and sexy.

This fun suit by Becca in a fresh white shade has an eye-catching laced shoulder strap. Those laces crisscross over the shoulder and into a deep dive down the back, for a look that is both sporty and sexy. As an added bonus, the open back provides another elongating element from behind.

Here's another one-shouldered look from Becca, this time in a sophisticated plus-size two-piece. The elegant, deep black color and sleek lines of this suit give it an uncluttered elegance.

VERTICAL STRIPES
Vertical stripes are great for giving the optical illusion of a longer line to visually lengthen a torso. But that doesn't mean you're trapped in rigid up-and-down stripes. There are lots of playful patterns that have the same vertical movement to give you the lean length you're looking for.

This suit from Anne Cole has two elements that provide slimming vertical motion: the bold white-on-black color blocking, and a sexy mesh panel down the front. Both draw your eye up and down, to lend a long, lean look.

While the vibrant stripes in this colorful tankini from Becca aren't strictly vertical, they create a pattern that effectively elongates and slims. The high neck top draws out the line of the torso even more, and the open back gives you a sexy flash of skin.

SOLID SIDE PANELS
Another great style to provide that long torso line is solid color side panels. This is the same concept with vertical stripes, a visual effect that makes the torso look longer.

The blue and black color blocking on the bottom of this modern one-piece suit from L*Space makes the torso appear long and slender. A plunging neckline adds to the lengthening effect.

UNDERWIRE BIKINI TOPS
If you would like to elongate the look of your neck, then styles that leave your shoulders bare and feature a deeper neckline are an excellent choice. Underwire bikini tops are a great way to get this look, while still providing your bust with the support it needs.

The bright color and fun tassel detail of this InMocean bikini top give you the long, graceful neckline you want. This sexy top also functions as a push-up, giving your bust a gorgeous boost.

For excellent support, along with the breezy feel and look of a bikini top, this feminine floral top from Raisins has it all. The shoulder straps are adjustable too, to keep them in place, so you aren't reaching for slipping straps all day.

DETAILS UP TOP
To draw the eye up, giving your body a longer line, try suits with fun details on top. Small framed petites are just the body type to have fun with ruffles and other eye-catching details.

This bright top from Raisins has a fluttery ruffle to skim your arms and a sexy lace-up front. The halter straps are removable, to give this look even more visual impact.

For a modern look, the bold stripes on this Anne Cole bikini top give it eye-catching flair. Not only do you get detail to draw eyes up, but it also features lengthening, slimming vertical stripes.

STYLES FOR FULL BUSTS
On a small frame, a larger bust can be overwhelming. Swimwear offers little opportunity to balance out a full bust, unlike street clothes. For a more evenly proportioned look, it helps to underemphasize larger chests.

The underwire support on this tankini top from Anne Cole provides comfortable support and a flattering fit. It features shirring and a twist front to provide fun detail.

For an unexpectedly flattering look try a bikini, like this halter style swim top from Isabella Rose. The thick straps provide support that doesn't cut into your shoulders and they also downplay a larger bust.

WIDE BAND BOTTOMS
If you want to look like you have more of an hourglass figure, try a two-piece with a supportive top, paired with bottoms with a wide band. This gives the illusion of a narrower waist, for a curvy, feminine look.

The hipster style of these bottoms from Seafolly and the vibrant, exotic print help create a curvy look. A band of horizontal straps on each side gives a sexy flash of skin.

The wide band of these bottoms from Luli Fama make them an excellent balance to any well-structured top. These also have side lacing, threaded through grommets for a fun detail. The higher cut legs help your legs look longer.

STRING BIKINI BOTTOMS
For lean petites, a string bikini bottom can be a very flattering look. Not only does it fit your proportions well, but the string tie sides also make it more adjustable to fit tiny frames.

The beachy hues and delicate lacy edging of this string bikini bottom from Luli Fama make it sweetly sexy.

For a brighter take on this look, this lettuce-edged bikini bottom from Seafolly has vibrant stripes. The string ties have beads to dangle for a relaxed feel.

No matter what your size or body type, the right swimwear will make you look and feel beautiful. Petite women don't have to settle for just a few "safe" styles. With a few simple guidelines, you will find a whole world of flattering swimwear.

What are pros and cons to one and two piece swimsuits?

There is such variety in both that I have trouble answering. I usually only wear one piece swim suits but I wear a lot of different ones. First, I don’t have a two-piece suit but I sometimes wear a rashguard or shirt to keep the sun off my shoulders so that kinda counts and can be very important for your safety.

I wear small suits when I exercise or race. But for snorkelling and active beach time, I like a swim suit that looks like a pair of shorts. I think it is tougher for when I sit on a rough rock or something and won’t rip so easily.

Maybe I am conservative on the subject but I think this quesiton is focused on women’s suits. Modern bikinis can be suitable for sports and won’t slip or show more than you want. I am not interested in tanning but if that is your goal, then you need more than one suit so the strap marks are tanned over by wearing suits with different strap placements.
I’ll first admit to being a one piece fan, but from my perspective (and others may have wildly differing views of course), here goes! -

One Piece:

Pros: Reliable (as in VERY unlikely to come off irrespective of how rough the water is). Far more comfortable to really swim in, and obviously far better for diving or similar activities. The more conventional designs can double up as a leotard for yoga / athletic activities, so a very multi-functional piece of apparel. The many high cut leg versions are excellent for accentuating the legs - if you are somewhat petite they can make your body appear a little bit longer too!

Cons: Generally cost a little more (though online shopping has almost eliminated this problem). Generally more coverage than two pieces (though some of the more “unconventional” designs are pretty minimalist!), and after a swim you’ve got a lot more wet fabric to deal with. The wet fabric can also be cold especially in windy conditions (so necessitating a change, sometimes not in the easiest of places!)

Two Piece:

Pros: Minimalist coverage (well the current crop are pretty minimalist), so very good for getting a nearly all-over tan (in places where nudity is prohibited); OK for casual swimming, gentle water sports, and traditionally greater sex appeal (though see above with VERY minimalist one piece numbers!)

Cons: Really not idea for serious swimming especially in rougher conditions. Ditto for diving - a common cause of “wardrobe malfunctions” especially in the more minimalist numbers. The straps / string do tend to dig in and chafe a bit after a few hours, and you are still going to get tan lines (although the current fashion for clear string bikinis is supposed to eliminate this problem - the clear string / strap material being fully UV transparent).

Current minimalist one-piece “monokini” (as sold by the Surf Shop alongside my Pharmacy!) -

Do you have to wash swimwear before wearing it?

You have to wash any new clothing before you wear it. You have no idea who touched it and tried it on before you bought it. There are also finishing products used on fabric that could irritate your skin if you're sensitive to them. Oh, and dark blue and black items can stain your skin if you don't wash them first.

After you buy any item of clothing and you wear it, you should always wash it after you wear it.

So, in other words, your swimsuit should be washed before you wear it.

You don’t have to wash swimwear before wearing it but if you plan to do a lot of swimming in swimming pools where chemical (chlorine) involved then you better wash it.

This article (please click on it) will explain why you should wash swim wear before wearing it and there are some tips in the article that help you keep your new swimsuit in a good condition and make it last longer in chlorinated pools.

Any time you purchase any fashion garment you should wash it especially swimwear and underwear. You never know who has tried it on before you. Here is a link to an article on how to care for your swimwear. care for bikinis Archives - The Bikini Police - Swimwear Fashion Advisor -Bikinis-One Piece Swimsuits and more

If you wash it its much better however if you are not interested in washing it then there is no real need for it . Swim wears are made of such fabrics which do not let water to enter into the fabrics.

Fabrics used in swimwear are polyester and nylon

Can You Alter A Swimsuit?

What can you do if your swimsuit doesn’t fit? Whether you lost some weight or that swimsuit you fell in love with doesn't fit like you'd hoped, sometimes you find yourself with a suit that simply isn't right. Swimwear should be fun and flattering, so what should you do with a swimsuit that lets you down? Can you alter a swimsuit?

COMMON PROBLEMS WITH SWIMSUITS FITTING
  • Too large all over. If you've recently lost weight, you may pull on your favorite swimsuit to discover that it's suddenly baggy. This can be true even with a weight loss of about 6 pounds. Two things to keep in mind: Reducing a swimsuit by more than one size probably won't look right, and if your suit is baggy because the fabric has lost its stretch then no alteration is going to help.
  • Too small. It may be from weight gain, or from a swimsuit manufacturer that simply didn't work for your exact curves, but sometimes you end up with a suit that is just too tight. Swimsuits don't have extra fabric to let out in the seam, but there are other ways of adding a little room, such as sewing in panels.
  • Your size on top doesn't match your size on bottom. This is a very common issue for women. If you buy a two-piece suit as a set, it can be frustrating to find one that matches your proportions.
  • You want a change. Maybe you're just ready for a new look? Making your one-piece suit into a high-waisted bikini or adding fabric to make your bikini into a one-piece can change things up.
SEW IT YOURSELF
Whether you need to take in seams to make your suit snug again or to add some inches to make it fit without pulling, it is possible to do alterations yourself. If you're accomplished at sewing, this is something you can tackle. Taking in the suit a little on the sides is fairly straightforward but be sure you use polyester thread and a stretch stitch, so the seam can stretch without snapping. An overlock machine can give you an entwined stitch for extra stretch. If the bodice is too large for your chest, you may want to consider adding "enhancer" cups to the suit. Altering the bodice can get complicated because it requires adjusting straps as well as fitting the seams to the rest of the suit.

If you need a little extra room, consider adding panels. Sheer fabric or lace panels are a very pretty addition to a suit. It's important to select a fabric that has the same kind of stretch as your swimsuit (2-way or 4-way). You want to be extra careful with the seam between your new panel and the original suit, so you don't end up with puckers in the fabric as you move.

HAVE IT ALTERED – BATHING SUIT ALTERATION
If you have a tailor that you love, you may want to consider having your swimsuit professionally altered. Keep in mind that certain changes will be pricey. If your suit has a liner, that will have to be adjusted separately. Also, some bathing suit alterations are more complicated, such as restructuring the bodice to accommodate a different sized bust. In some cases, having a professional rework your swimsuit may cost more than a new one.

No Speedo? Then don't try to go swimming in France — seriously

If you’ve traveled outside of the US this summer, a foreign language may not have necessarily been the biggest stress factor of the trip. Local customs are often what get us stumped.

Take a trip to the local pool, for example. Seems like an easy and universal-enough activity to not have to jump through the daunting hoops of cultural differences, right? Wrong. It can be an uncomfortable experience.

I am a native of the city of Auxerre, Burgundy, in France. It’s a lovely place of about 35,000 people, rich with medieval history.

It’s small, but it boasts many remarkable historical monuments, including a cathedral and an abbey from the Middle Ages and some ancient churches and chapels. It sits in the middle of the Burgundian hills, known for their excellent wines.

The city has another, more modern attraction that locals are proud of: its phenomenal public pool — or as it’s called there, the Nautical Stadium. It has four indoor heated pools with a jacuzzi, and three outside pools including an Olympic-sized one with a long, swirly slide. It is an extravagantly large — for its town — aquatic facility, built on the green banks of the river Yonne.

People travel from surrounding towns and villages to spend the day there, sunbathe on its beautiful lawns and snack at its eatery, when they are not swimming. You pay a small fee to get a bracelet which gives you access to the facilities. There's nothing tricky, except for the bathing suit rules.

You see, in most French public pools, there are strict regulations about the kind of bathing suit you can wear, and therefore share with others, in the water.

Simply put, where hygiene is concerned, your swimsuit cannot be something you could be found wearing outside the pool. That means no trunks, Bermuda shorts, T-shirts or anything that is not strictly meant for swimming.

Auxerre’s pool administrators say they do not want people to drag any dirt on, or under, their summer attire into the pool. So if you are going to join the masses of swimmers — all 2,000 of them on a busy summer day — you'll have very little cloth covering your own birthday suit.

Where else would you be told to wear something shorter and tighter, no matter your shape? Man, woman or child, you’ll have to wear some form of spandex, something tight, the kind Speedo makes. Something that often leaves nothing to the imagination — and it’s not to everyone’s liking.

If you are caught entering the pool with biking shorts, running shorts or trunks, lifeguards — turned fashion police — will blow the whistle and send you back to the lobby where you will be asked to purchase proper attire. This is where convenient vending machines come in.

In the Auxerre pool lobby, there are machines that vend soft drinks, sandwiches and espressos, and others that dispense anything needed for the pool, from ear plugs, soap, shampoo and goggles, to swimwear.

A mannequin in swimming trunks with a big “forbidden” sign around its neck in the pool’s lobby is supposed to illustrate, for unsuspecting tourists, the kind of bathing suit that is acceptable. As a result, looking around, there is a certain repetitiveness to the swimsuit designs worn by men and boys.

There are four different designs in all, perhaps because that is all that is available at the vending machine or at the inexpensive sports store in town.

In the years since those regulations went into effect, I cannot remember hordes of disgruntled tourists getting outraged about this. But occasionally, one gets caught with his pants long (men more than women for obvious reasons) and is not happy about it.

The French have just gotten used to this, but for some visitors, the fact that municipal administrators have the authority to get you dressed to their liking — or un-dressed as the case may be — is completely infuriating. That is one of those unavoidable cultural quirks travelers must contend with in France.

As a resident of the United States, used to the uncompromising French swimsuit rules, it’s always disconcerting to me that anyone would be allowed to walk straight into an American public pool, from the street to the water, fully dressed, trunks over underwear, T-shirt over chest and sometimes with water shoes on.

That could make me love the French “no clothes — just Speedos” rules even more.

But perhaps there are no people on Earth prouder of their public pools than Icelanders. Iceland, where I just spent a few days, is rich with geothermal springs and big cities enjoy naturally heated outdoor pools. Because there are no chemicals in those pools, swimmers are expected to take a meticulous soap-and-scrub shower before entering the pool.

We were told that the rules are strictly enforced everywhere, and so visitors oblige.

This was my experience recently at the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa near Reykjavik, where a very polite young staff lady looked on and directed all female visitors to shower in the nude before letting them into the hot spring. No one seemed to object. But then again, people were not told what to wear.

Extend The Life OF Your Swimwear

SWIM IN STYLE, SEASON AFTER SEASON
Congrats! You’ve found your perfect swimsuit. Protect, clean, rotate, and store it properly to keep it vibrant and fitting beautifully.

PROTECT
Lotion, sunscreen, oil, and deodorant are harsh on swim fabrics, discoloring and staining them, and ultimately deteriorating their elasticity. Apply 15 to 30 minutes before you put on your suit so they’re absorbed only by your skin.

Shower in fresh water before swimming: the suit’s fibers will absorb less chlorine. And if the chlorine content of your pool or hot tub is too high, both spandex and dyes can break down. It’s also smart to dedicate a single suit to hot tub use, as high temps and chlorine age swim fabrics quickly.

To lock in dyes, soak a new suit for 30 minutes in a vinegar-and-water solution before the first wash. Use one tablespoon of white vinegar for each quart of water.

Finally, always sit on a towel or wear a pareo to avoid abrasion from rough surfaces.

CLEAN
Even if you’ve only been sunbathing, always hand wash your suit with an ultra-gentle detergent in cold water to remove salt, oils, and dirt. If no detergent is handy, a cold rinse is better than nothing.

Never put swimwear in a washing machine: the agitation will stretch, strain, and break down the delicate pads and linings, leaving it ill-fitting.

Wringing will also damage your suit’s fibers, so lay it flat between two towels and roll it, pressing gently to squeeze out water. To dry, lay it flat (don’t hang it from ties) away from direct sunlight.

ROTATE
Spandex is a memory fabric and needs 24 hours to fully snap back. You need multiple options if you wear swimwear more than occasionally. This is especially essential for vacationing: bring a variety so you can clean and let them dry fully before wearing again. Spandex bounce-back ensures a great, lasting fit.

STORE
Your suits are ready for storage when they’ve been washed and are completely dry.

Don’t keep them in airtight containers or dry cleaners’ bags, because mildew will develop if there’s any moisture in the fibers. Cedar blocks or lavender sachets in your storage box or drawer are an effective way to add a natural scent and keep any pests away. And lastly, avoid dryer sheets, as they can leave residue on fabrics.

Enjoy the lasting beauty of your suit!
